Amos, the Poor Man’s Prophet

A Summer in the Minors, Part I

Hosea 1:1-3; 10:12-13

Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 31:6 “So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

The Book of Hosea—

          Hosea—a godly prophet. Symbolic of God.

Gomer—started off as a godly wife; became an unfaithful (harlot) wife. Symbolic of Israel.

Jezreel—first son. Name means, “the Lord sows.” Related to the biblical site of Jezreel.

          Lo-Ruhamah—daughter. Name means, “no mercy.”

          Lo-Ammi-a son. Name means “you are not my people.”

#2—2 Kings 15-17—Historical and biblical backdrop for the book of Hosea.

#3—Hosea 3:1-3—God continued to love Israel even in their state of idolatry. But…..

#4—Fallow ground–

#5—Hosea—symbolic of a faithful, loving God, who is willing to redeem us from out sinful state.

       Gomer—symbolic of unfaithful Israel, but also symbolic of us, and our unfaithfulness.
