The Fourth Warning–Hebrews 10:35-39

          We are not people who shrink back because we have faith.

What is faith?

          Faith involves things we don’t know and don’t see.

          Faith is looking to God as our source.

          Faith is knowing God knows more than we know.

          Faith is knowing God can provide more than what we have.

          Faith is knowing God knows what to do when we don’t know.

          Faith is obeying what God has told us to do or where He has told us to go.

What we have is not all there is that is available to us.

          Psalm 150 tells us that God owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

What we know is not all there is to know.

          Psalm 147—God’s understanding is infinite.

What we can do is not the limit of what God can do.

          Job 42 tells us that God can do all things. No purpose or plan of God can be thwarted.

Thwarted—to successfully oppose; to frustrate; or baffle.

Jesus is the superior person—chapters 1-6

Jesus is the superior High Priest—chapters 7-10

How to live by faith—chapters 11-13

Take time to read Hebrews 11 and get to know the people who are celebrated for their faith. The best way to develop faith is to hang folks who have faith. Get to know their stories and then live as they do.

The writer of Hebrews included five warnings to readers.

Warning #1—Hebrews 2:1-4 A warning to not drift away from the things of God.

Warning #2—Hebrews 3:7-4:13 A warning to beware of a hardened heart.

Warning #3—Hebrews 5:11-6:20 A warning not to stray from the path God created for you to walk.

Warning #4—Hebrews 10:36-39—Do Not Shrink Back from Your Faith!

          Many examples of not shrinking back are given in Hebrews 11

Don’t Stray

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 (NIV) “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, ¹⁶ making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. ¹⁷ Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. ¹⁸ Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, ¹⁹ speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, ²⁰ always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The writer of Hebrews gives three pastoral warnings to his readers.

Warning #1—Hebrews 2:1-4

          Don’t allow yourself to drift away from the Gospel

Warning #2—Hebrews 3:7-11

          Don’t allow your heart to become hardened.

Warning #3—Hebrews 5:12-6:20

          Don’t stray from the path or reject the plan God has prepared for you.

Hebrews 6:4-6—A very difficult passage, but…….

Who is the writer talking to?

Hebrews 6:7-8—A very stern warning with a dire picture.

Hebrews 6:9-12—A hopeful reminder.

Rest—closely related to walking in right relationship with God. Rest happens when our inner most being—our thoughts, emotions, mind, and our will are in proper alignment with God.

Ephesians 2:8-9—We are saved by grace, not by our works.

Romans 15:7—Our works do not cause God to accept us.

1. Hebrews 4:6-10

God’s rest remains. Today if you hear His voice.

Matthew 11:28-30—God continues to offer rest.

Ephesians 3:14-21–An Apostolic Blessing from the Apostle Paul.

Why settle for #2 when you can have #1?

Hebrews 1:5-14—Jesus is superior to angels.

            Verse 4—A more excellent name.

            Angels are created beings. Jesus has been eternally self-existent.

Seven Old Testament Quotes in Hebrews 1:5-14—Psalm 2; 2 Samuel 23; Deuteronomy 32:43; Psalm 104:4; Psalm 45:6-7; Psalm 102: 25-27; Psalm 110.

The purpose of the book of Hebrews: Hebrews 13:22 “And I appeal to you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation [encouragement], for I have written to you in few words.”

The book of Hebrews contains 5 warnings (encouragements): 2:1-4; 3:7-4:13; 5:11-6:20; 10:19-39; & 12:25-29.

First Warning: 2:1-4. “Don’t drift away from the word.”

Verse 3—If rejecting the Law carried penalties, how much more so does rejecting salvation through Jesus?
